Crunch time

They keep the doctor away and they may be children's favourite fruit - and Fiona Hamilton-Fairley's, too Here it is autumn, and time for the children (and their carers) to sample some of our finest fruit and vegetables. Among my favourite autumn fruits are apples. They are great for munching at any time during the day, an invigorating snack that also quenches your thirst and generally helps to keep you healthy. They are great for munching at any time during the day, an invigorating snack that also quenches your thirst and generally helps to keep you healthy. Did you know that:

* Fresh apples float because 25 percent of their volume is air.

* If you cut an apple in half across the core, you will see a star shape.

* The largest apple ever picked from a tree weighed three pounds two ounces, according to the Guinness Book of Records.
