DCSF childcare providers' directory lacks nursery tabs

Provision
A national directory of childcare providers and family services in England launched by the DCSF will enable parents to search for nurseries, childminders, after-school clubs and children's centres.

The Family Information Directory is part of the Family Information Direct programme, the Government's flagship knowledge service for parents, which was previously called Parent Know How.

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo, who launched the website on Tuesday, said, 'The Family Information Directory pulls useful information together in one place and gives parents and carers quick access to information about childcare and family services.'

But while the directory home page has a specific category for children's centres, schools and family services, there are no separate sections for nurseries or childminders, which are listed under the heading 'childcare'.

Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the NDNA, said, 'While any information to help parents choose childcare is welcome, we believe it would be useful to have tabs by type of childcare similar to that on the website for Sure Start Children's Centres. A postcode search under "childcare" will bring up all available types of childcare in the area, but the number this returns could make narrowing it down hard for parents. Many parents will be looking for a particular type of care, such as a nursery or childminder.'
