DfEE is alerted to national threat for nursery schools

The Department for Education and Employment has been warned that nursery schools across the UK are facing closure. The problem has been highlighted by a series of conferences for nursery school headteachers. When employment and equal opportunities minister Margaret Hodge addressed the first conference in London, she played down the risk to nursery schools, saying that the Government had felt 'some concern' but statistics indicated the problem was not as bad as the nursery sector thought.

However, Anne Page, a consultant to the DfEE for the project to extend and expand nursery school services, also attended the conferences in Birmingham and York and said she had taken back the message that many nursery schools faced an uncertain future, despite a 7m boost from central Government last October.
