The move follows the recommendationof a DfEE-chaired working group on school security, set up following the fatal stabbing of London headteacher Philip Lawrence in 1995.

The new materials, launched by schools minister Jacqui Smith last week, aim to help improve the security of pupils and reduce the incidence of theft, vandalism and arson. The video gives practical advice about checking security in and around schools, involving both the staff and the pupils.

The video (ref DfEE 0045/2001) is available free to anyone working in schools, including caretakers and governors. It can be ordered from the DfEE Publications Centre, PO Box 5050, Sherwood Park, Nottingham NG15 0DL (0845 6022260). Information is also available on the website at www.dfee.gov.uk/schoolsecurity
