Don't think outside the box, think with the box

In response to Carol Adams' letter, 'Get learning in order' (4 January), I felt that it hit the nail on the head. I read out her letter to the members of staff in my playgroup setting and watched with interest as their heads nodded in agreement.

I remember my daughter, when she was four, having received three Christmas presents in particular. She got far more fun from the boxes and wrapping paper that they came in than she ever did from the contents. The pleasure, language, imagination, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, maths learning - the list could go on - that she obtained from the boxes, I am sure, far outweighed what she derived from the contents.

Children do learn while they play. I am sure that this provides the foundation blocks for the skills that they will acquire when they go to school.
