Early years practitioners who wish to develop their careers with a view to moving into nursery management can now study for a degree-level qualification without taking time out of work to attend university.

The key to this concept lies in accessing online learning, or e-learning as it is often called. According to Liverpool Hope University College, which recently launched online versions of its foundation degree Management of Childcare Provision and BA in Nursery Management, e-learning has the potential to develop new managers by unlocking the talents of an existing workforce that other forms of training cannot always reach.

'By studying these programmes, students gain a thorough understanding of key aspects of nursery and early years settings and the external environment in which they operate,' explains Sue O'Neill, awards director for the Management of Childcare Provision foundation degree. 'The courses are specifically tailored to the childcare sector so that students develop a range of management and business skills relevant to childcare practice.
