Early years loses out in training body bids

The early years sector's initial bid to have its own dedicated organisation to oversee workforce training has been rejected by the Government. Nursery World understands that the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) received 31 bids for trailblazer Sector Skills Council status, of which 25 were rejected by the shortlisting panel, including the bid for early years submitted on behalf of the sector by the Council for Awards in Childcare and Education (CACHE).

The shortlisted sectors were sport and recreation; land-based industries; audio-visual industries; apparel, footwear and textile; and petrochemicals and retail. The bid on behalf of sport and recreation was made by SPRITO, the national training organisation for workers in sport and leisure facilities which covers playworkers.

The ministerial announcement as to which bids had won final approval had not been made as Nursery World went to press earlier this week. It is not yet clear what organisation will be responsible for overseeing early years training after the Early Years NTO, along with all other NTOs, is disbanded in March next year.
