Early years petition reply 'misses point'

Aprominent early years consultant has expressed her disappointment at the Government's response to her petition protesting about the national literacy strategy. Margaret Edgington said she was 'not at all happy' with the official response from education secretary Estelle Morris, as it 'missed the point'. Her petition, which has been signed by more than 2,500 people, expressed concern that practitioners, especially in reception classes, were being hindered in their attempts to implement the principles of the Foundation Stage by pressure from primary headteachers and colleagues in Key Stage 1.

Her petition, which has been signed by more than 2,500 people, expressed concern that practitioners, especially in reception classes, were being hindered in their attempts to implement the principles of the Foundation Stage by pressure from primary headteachers and colleagues in Key Stage 1.

The petition called for all primary headteachers, advisers and consultants to receive specialist guidance on the Foundation Stage, and for Foundation Stage practitioners to be released from requirements to implement the literacy and numeracy strategies.
