Early years workforce debate shared with Europe on forum

Early years practitioners in Scotland can participate in discussions on the role of the early years workforce with their peers in Europe via a new online forum launched by Children in Scotland.

The forum was introduced during Children in Scotland's four-day study visit and seminar, 'Working for Inclusion: the diversity dimension', when delegates from across Europe visited ten of Scotland's leading early years provisions to look at diversity in disability, additional support for learning and gender diversity in the workplace.

The visit and forum are part of a two-year programme called 'Working for Inclusion: the role of the early years workforce in addressing poverty and promoting social inclusion'. This aims to encourage discussion, debate and information sharing among ten EU member states.

It will focus on early childhood education and care systems and four themes: the child as a protagonist; working with diversity; rural and remote areas; and working in an inclusive way.

The programme, launched earlier this year, is funded by the European Commission, supported by the Scottish government and led by Children in Scotland.

Key points from the seminar and online forum will contribute to a final report to be submitted to the European Commission.

Adam Ingram, Scotland's minster for children and early years, who spoke at the seminar, said, 'We firmly believe our children's early years represent a golden opportunity, which is why the Scottish government is driving an unprecedented focus on support during this period through our Early Years Framework.

'It's gratifying that so many delegates from overseas have come to see the good work going on in Scotland.'
