A 220,000 project to create an eco-classroom for Year Two at Stanley Infant and Nursery School in Richmond on Thames has won planning permission.

The pioneering design is the result of a collaboration between construction company Framework CDM and architects Mark Dudek Associates. The project had to be functional and affordable and cause the least possible disruption to both the school and its environment.

Mark Dudek said, 'The school was involved from the very beginning, to ensure flexibility and multi-functionality. The space had to double as extended school facilities and community space for evening and weekend use.

The classroom is the first to be tailor-made as as an early years facility by Framework, which delivers walls, ceilings and floors complete in panel form ready to be slotted into place. The classroom is set to be delivered in just 14 weeks, with added environmentally-friendly features.

Mr Dudek said, 'The template offers the possibility of enhancing sustainability benchmarks with solar and wind power generation and grey water recycling.'
