Edinburgh Council produces rigorous guidelines on use of pictures of children on school websites

Edinburgh Council has produced rigorous guidelines on use of pictures of children on school websites. Photographs of children up to Primary 5 should only be used if the children are not identifiable, for example, if their backs are to the camera or their faces are out of shot. Children should also not be shown in leotards or swimming costumes, or in a partial state of undress no matter what activity they are taking part in. Instead, they should be dressed as for normal classroom work.

A spokeswoman for the council said the guidelines had been written for schools but would be taken to the next partnership monitoring meeting in January. Partner providers in the voluntary and private sectors will have the opportunity to give their views on whether the guidelines are appropriate for them and on how they could be amended.
