The drive to recognise the importance of outdoor play for young children's development and to improve the experiences that are available to them is gaining in strength. Early Education had outdoor play as the main focus of its 80th anniversary year this year, and Learning Through Landscapes is concentrating on developing its services for early years providers. Nursery World has been running regular features on planning and resourcing for outdoor activities across the curriculum. We know that our readers are very keen to have guidance and support in improving their outdoor provision. Margaret Edgington's seminar on outdoor play at our London Early Years and Primary Teaching Exhibition last month attracted a record of nearly 300 delegates.

And Nursery World's 'Grounds for success' competition, run with LTL last year, had a huge number of entries, showing how keen settings are to develop their provision. We're delighted to be able to run the competition again this year and we're sure that lots of you will want to try your hand for some great prizes and help with improving your outdoor area. See our four-page pull-out from page 21 for details, ideas to adapt and your entry form.
