The importance of social and emotional development for young children is a major focus in this week's issue of Nursery World. on pages 12-13, examines how physical closeness and cuddles are vital for babies and toddlers to develop confidence and security. Author Jennie Lindon believes that the lack of physical contact in some nurseries will harm young children's emotional development.

This is a theme that is further explored by Julian Grenier in 'A matter of opinion', page 24, where he details some compelling and contentious arguments about the role of men in childcare. One of the main obstacles to more men working in this sector is, of course, the climate of fear about accusations of child abuse.
