Happy New Year from everybody at Nursery World. As practitioners and policymakers get back into the swing of things and contemplate another year packed with change and development, it's a good point to pause and reflect on some of the aspects of children's learning that are fundamental to providing early years education of the highest quality. There are few people better placed to do this than Dr Jacqui Cousins, who has written this week's eight-page guide 'All About... Children's Learning'. Several years ago, Jacqui wrote an article for Nursery World about listening to four-year-olds, in which young children spoke of the stresses of formal education and preparing for SATS that loomed large in their lives. This article was hugely influential in the ensuing debate about formal and informal learning and the establishment of the Foundation Stage.
