It's all talk in this week's issue of Nursery World - but that certainly doesn't mean no action, as you'll discover when you read on. In our six-page, special pull-out guide (pages 15-20), Di Chilvers examines children's chatter - something which sounds inconsequential, but which is of the utmost importance and offers fantastic opportunities for sustained shared thinking. When children start conversations that are responded to by a thoughtful, supportive adult, these can develop into powerful learning experiences. So find out how to 'un-plan' and follow children's talk to great effect. For some children, of course, speech, language and communication do not come easily. The children's speech and language charity I CAN wants to find out whether early years practitioners are getting the support and training they need on this important issue with a survey of Nursery World readers (see page 21). Everyone who responds to the questionnaire will receive a free DVD training resource, due to be released in May, which shows good practice in action.

Politicians, too, are mobilising over the need for better early intervention services for children with speech and language difficulties.

We report on the launch of a new all-party parliamentary action group calling for more funding for specialist services, including speech and language therapists (see News, page 6).
