Education show: Early years playground is alive with the sound of music

Musical enjoyment is being taken outdoors with a new range of instruments devised for use in the playground.

The Freenotes range of musical instruments have been designed by HandMade Places and will be launched at the Education Show in Birminghamthis week. They aim to help young children develop their creative skillsthrough free play or directed use, and allow for any combination ofsounds to be easily played in harmony via a special five-note scale.

The range includes the Manta Ray (pictured), an aluminium metallophonewith a single row of bars, which replicate the piano keyboard. There arealso ten-foot-high eye chimes, and tubano drums, which have a specialsound amplifier. All of the instruments have been confirmed by the PlayInspection Company as complying with the European Standard forPlayground Equipment.
