Effects of poor diets will dog children for life

* The poor diets of children in families on low incomes can have lifelong consequences for their health, according to a report by the Child Poverty Action Group. The report, Poverty Bites - Food, health and poor families, said food poverty was a major public health issue. A woman in a low-income household is more likely to be poorly nourished and to produce a low birth-weight or premature baby, and research suggests that malnutrition at certain critical phases before and after birth can make a child more susceptible to ill health in later life.

The report said nutrition can also affect educational attainment. Children who come to school hungry or undernourished are less likely to behave well or concentrate. It pointed out that breakfast clubs were one way of addressing food poverty.
