Egg activity health risk

I felt that I must write to you to express our concern about the springtime ideas article (Outdoors, 15 March). An activity is recommended which involves the children blowing chicken eggs to empty the shells. It then suggests using the whites and yolks for baking. I have checked with our local Environmental Health Officer and she agreed that this is not a suitable activity for small children. There is a risk of salmonella food poisoning from contact with eggshells and from contact with raw egg. There is also a risk of cross-contamination when using the whites and yolks blown by the children in baking.

I know it sounds like we are being party poopers, but I believe this risk is unacceptable in a nursery setting.
