A new guide giving teachers support and advice on teaching refugee children is being distributed to nurseries, schools and colleges throughout Scotland. The Scottish teaching union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), has published the guide in conjunction with Glasgow City Council.

The Scottish teaching union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), has published the guide in conjunction with Glasgow City Council.

Teaching Children from Refugee and Asylum Seeking Families covers the key issues, legal rights to education and how best educational establishments can support refugees.

Both the EIS and Glasgow City Council are committed to the principle that all children should be educated in mainstream schools.

Ronnie Smith, EIS general secretary said, 'The EIS hopes that this guide will demonstrate the importance of continuing to provide equal access to education for all young people in Scotland.'

Ronnie O'Connor, director of education services for Glasgow City Council, added, 'We are committed to the principle that all children should be educated in a school environment. Recent research has proved this position correct by finding that young asylum seekers felt the best thing about life in Glasgow was school and their teachers.'
