Estate nursery to close for lack of fee payers

A neighbourhood nursery that opened on a deprived city estate at the request of the city council is closing because of lack of funding.

The Kidz R Us nursery was set up on Leicester's Northfields estate in2005 by Mina Bharat and her partner, with the help of a three-year,245,000 Neighbourhood Nurseries Initiative grant, after thecouple - who owned two private nurseries - were approached by LeicesterCity Council.

That money has now run out and the nursery will close on 31 July becauseit cannot attract enough full fee-paying parents. At present, around 50children qualify for the 7 an hour nursery education grant andthe remainder pay 147.50p a week in fees.

The couple were hoping to keep the nursery going with a grant from thecouncil's Single Regeneration Budget, but their request was turned down, although a Sure Start centre has been opened directly opposite thefailed nursery.
