I read with growing interest your article 'A closer look' about the inadequacies of the Ofsted inspection system (Nursery World, 14 April). As a nursery manager I have had many inspections and I get more jaded with each one. At my last inspection I was faced with an inspector who was 'inspecting'

At my last inspection I was faced with an inspector who was 'inspecting'

the baby room and said, 'I know nothing about babies, but I think it would be a good idea if you painted multicultural children all around the bottom of the wall for the babies to look at.'

It shows that she had absolutely no understanding or knowledge of child development. I just managed to overcome the desire to ask why she was inspecting at all!

Another inspector told me that I must not let any man into the nursery to safeguard the children, as 90 per cent of men were child abusers! No amount of explaining that 90 per cent of child abusers were men - a rather different statistic - worked. She stuck to her opinion.
