Experts reviewing foundation phase

The first evaluation of the effectiveness of the Foundation Phase is being undertaken by a team of early years experts from London and Cardiff appointed by the Welsh Assembly. Pilots for the Foundation Phase for three- to seven-year-olds - the framework that takes a skills and play-based approach to learning - began in 41 schools and early years settings across 22 local authorities in Wales in September.

Over the next 12 months, academics from the University of London's Institute of Education and the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), will monitor and evaluate the introduction of the framework for three- to five-year-olds.

The Monitoring and Evaluation of the Effective Implementation of the Foundation Phase study, which has been funded by a 98,000 grant from the National Assembly for Wales, will highlight effective practice and draw attention to aspects that need further development.
