Ways that extended schools can cater for disabled children and young people will be the focus of a pilot project soon to consult with local authorities.

The Extending Inclusion project, launched by the Council for Disabled Children and ContinYou - a community learning charity which uses learning to tackle inequality and build social inclusion - will look at the difficulties that disabled children face in accessing facilities. It will work with parents, disabled children and six local authorities to identify how the extended school model can overcome traditional barriers.

The 18-month project is being funded by the Department for Education and Skills and will cost in the region of 50,000. It will investigate obstacles ranging from staffing issues to practical matters such as health and safety regulations.
