The figures (see table below), which are based on practitioners' observations at the end of reception year, reveal that the biggest gap in achievement is found in communication, language and literacy: writing, where 72 per cent of girls were working securely within the assessment areas, compared with only 53 per cent of boys.
The statistics, published last week, are the first set since the introduction of the EYFS in September 2008. Against last year's figures, they show that more children are working securely within the early learning goals in every area of learning, which means they are achieving six or more points out of nine in each scale.
