Hundreds of early years inspectors employed by Tribal and Prospects Services were made to sit the assessment following the introduction of Ofsted's new early years inspection framework and the revised EYFS. Tribal has already started to sack inspectors who failed the assessment after the second attempt.
Public sector union Unison, which represents some of the early years inspectors, claims that the assessment process was merely a cost-cutting exercise to allow the organisations to move to employing freelance inspectors.
Many of the inspectors employed by Tribal and Prospects Services were originally employed by Ofsted but had their terms and conditions of employment protected under TUPE when Ofsted privatised early years inspections in September 2010.
