Family and state held to account on children

The relationship between the state and the family in supporting children's well-being is to come under the scrutiny of a new national commission. The National Family and Parenting Institute and NCH, with support from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, launched the commission on 1 June, at the same time as opening the consultation paper, 'An inquiry into the relationship between the state and the family in the upbringing of children'.

The Commission consists of 15 members from a variety of different practice, policy, and research backgrounds.

One member, Stephen Burke, director of the Daycare Trust, said that it represented a 'unique opportunity' to investigate how the relationship between the state and the family could be structured and come up with 'new ideas and new ways of thinking' so that all children can get the best support.
