Fathers to go undercover to mind their own children on reality TV

Fathers will be dressing up as nannies to find out what their children get up without their parents around in a new reality television series.

The 13-part series 'Undercover Dads' starts next month on children's channel CBBC. It is aimed at five- to 12-year-olds.

Each week the 'Nan Van' will visit a different location and family home. Each contestant in the series will have gone to 'Nanny Boot Camp' to learn to walk, talk and act like a 'lady', and then undergo a Mrs Doubtfire-style makeover, sitting in the makeup chair for five hours and using state-of-the-art prosthetics to become the fictional eccentric TV expert 'Mega Nanny'. The host of the show, Dave Chapman, will set each contestant a series of tough and messy challenges.

The father's mission will be to spend two days unrecognised in his own home looking after his own children. If he is recognised the game is over, but if his identity remains a secret and he proves that he knows his children better than ever, he wins a range of family prizes.

The makers of 'Undercover Dads', independent television production company Tiger Aspect, claim that the aim is to get fathers to spend more quality time with their children and get to know them better.

Howard Davidson, head of entertainment development at Tiger Aspect and co-producer of 'Undercover Dads', said, 'My wife Joanna Killingley, who is co-producing the show, and I came up with the idea years ago after speaking to friends who said they wanted to see their children more.

'We needed a cover story, so we invented Mega Nanny, as lots of kids are familiar with the television parenting expert Supernanny.'

'Undercover Dads' starts on Sunday, 26 July at 9am on CBBC.
