Fees soar as subsidy lost

Childcare costs in the Republic of Ireland are soaring because hundreds of low- and middle-income families have lost their subsidised places following Government changes of policy.

The Irish government said that the changes would mean that money wouldbe targeted towards the children of families who are most in need ofsupport. But they are changes that will see fees rising by up to 100 percent for families who are not claiming social welfare cash help.

As Nursery World reported last year (News, 13 December 2007),not-for-profit childcare groups feared they would have to raise feesbecause fewer parents would qualify for subsidised childcare. Under theCommunity Subvention Scheme, introduced in January, grants tonot-for-profit providers are issued on the basis of the benefit statusof parents whose children attend their settings.

At Dublin's Liberty Park Community creche, the city council has hikedthe EUR125 (101) per child weekly fees up to EUR170 (137)for low- or middle-income families who are not receiving socialwelfare.
