Help children to understand how the postal system works and give them a purpose for writing.

Planned learning intention

To understand that writing conveys meaning and to use their own mark-making as a means of communication

Adult:child ratio

Writing letters: 1:up to 4 children in the office area. Posting letters: 1:2. Resources

Writing paper (commercially produced pads printed with characters are usually popular), notelets, pencils, pens, envelopes, stamps, selection of letters including letters that have recently been sent home to parents from the setting, list of children's home addresses.

Activity content

* Show children some letters. Some, such as 'topic' letters, may include illustrations that give children clues about the contents. Discuss the purposes of these letters.
