Children and babies are prone to urinary tract infections (UTI). An estimated 3 per cent of girls and 1 per cent of boys will have had a UTI by the time they reach 11 years old. Around 50 per cent of these will experience more than one within a year.

What causes it?

Bacteria entering the urine cause urine infections. The most common type is called E.coli, which is abundant in faeces. The bacteria then travels up the urethra and into the bladder.
