Flying high

Flight, wind and air possess some captivating qualities. Look skywards for inspiration and hit the heights with uplifting activities from Miranda Walker FLYING MACHINES

FLYING MACHINES

Why not introduce the theme with a spot of research into the history of flight in books or on the internet? Pictures of early flying machines may inspire some interesting clay or recycled models - if you provide some big cardboard boxes the children could make large-scale aeroplanes and play inside. Remember they'll need extra card for wings!

Children may also enjoy researching in a recent Guinness Book of Records. They can find out about modern hot-air balloon pilots, who have set exciting records in balloons.

Look out too for pictures of novelty balloons in wonderful, wacky shapes, often produced for advertising. The group could follow suit, designing their own beautiful balloons and depicting them on posters, or they could decorate inflated balloons.
