In the second edition of this well-known book Dr John Matthews includes research carried out in Singapore and Australia and adds further support to his theory of artistic development.

Drawing on data collected through 'naturalistic methods' with more than 100 children, Matthews argues against the 'deficit' model of development whereby artistic development is gauged in comparison to a culturally specific end-point (for example, realism). He instead asserts children's drawings and paintings are, from the earliest scribbles, meaningful - infused with emotion and expression.
