Christine Skinner's fascinating study examines the juggling acts undertaken by parents, especially mothers, in attempting to manage work and home commitments. She focuses on the complex arrangements needed to get children from home to carer, to school, to after-school club and home again. She examines the impact of journey times and the choices families must make in order to accommodate everyone's needs.
In considering the policy implications of the study, the author identifies three factors which need to be addressed in establishing family-friendly policy. These are the value of the support given by fathers; the time and energy expended in getting from place to place - often in a very short space of time; and the gap between part-time early education and the childcare required for parents to undertake even part-time work.
