Foundation Phase given 62m more to implement

The Welsh Assembly government has announced a further 62m of funding over three years for implementing the Foundation Phase.

The budget available until 2011 now stands at 174m, an increaseof 67m on the original funding allocation. An extra 5m wasallocated in May.

The statutory roll-out of the Foundation Phase for three- andfour-year-olds in Wales began last month (News, 11 September).

The extra money, announced last week by education minister Jane Hutt,follows concerns raised by groups such as the Welsh Local GovernmentAssociation and the National Association of Head Teachers Cymru in Maythat the original funding allocation was inadequate (News, 15 May2008).

Ms Hutt said, 'The Welsh Assembly government promise to fully fund theFoundation Phase is demonstrated by the level of new funding nowavailable to support the employment of additional staff and to train theexisting and future workforce. Schools, settings and local authoritiesare now well positioned to fully deliver the Foundation Phase acrossWales.
