Framework title reflects new aim

The new title for the birth-to-five framework more accurately reflects its core elements that combine education and care, children's minister BeverleyHughes claimed last week. The single framework, which will combine Birth to Three Matters and the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, was decreed the Early Years Foundation Stage by Ms Hughes at the Daycare Trust conference last week. It previously carried the working title the Early Development and Learning Framework.

A DfES spokesperson said that ministers had 'carefully considered' the working title. 'They were looking for a name that has some connection to the existing frameworks and documents, maintains continuity with the later stages of the national curriculum, and signals inclusion of the birth-to-three element on a statutory basis for the first time. We believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage achieves these aspirations.'
