Free books for five-year-olds

A programme promoting the pleasure of reading will see that 700,000 children starting school across the UK have a free copy of Funnybones by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and a guide for parents on the benefits of shared reading.

Under the Booktime initiative, backed by the Department for Children,Schools and Families, every primary school and library in England willalso receive a free resource pack to coincide with the childrenreceiving their own book packs from their class teacher. Resources,including activity sheets, session ideas, a short Booktime film, and apodcast of author Allan Ahlberg will also be available to download fromwww.booktime.pearson.com.

This year the aim is to provide every child in reception in England witha free book pack, while at least half of all four- and five-year-olds inthe rest of the UK receive packs during the academic year.

Last year more than 270,000 children in 7,500 UK schools received aBooktime pack through local authority and library services.
