Free breakfast on Welsh menu

* Every primary school pupil in Wales is to get the chance to start their school day with a free breakfast. Jane Davidson, education minister, told the Welsh Assembly last week that the breakfast would be optional and that the scheme's focus was on the children who 'for whatever reason' do not have the opportunity to have breakfast before leaving home for school. She said, 'Nutrition has a major influence on health. Children have high nutritional requirements and breakfast has an important role in supplying these.

'Missing breakfast may lead to an unhealthy pattern of snacking on high fat, high sugar foods throughout the morning. Undernourished children not only suffer poor growth but are also more susceptible to illness and more likely to be absent from school.'
