Free milk at lunchtime is to be extended to all primary school pupils in Glasgow

Free milk at lunchtime is to be extended to all primary school pupils in Glasgow in an initiative funded by the Scottish Executive's Hungry for Success programme. Glasgow City Council already offers free milk to pupils who buy a meal or snack under its Pick 'n' Mix initiative. From next month all 41,228 primary pupils will be offered milk whether they buy food or not under the initiative, which is expected to cost 56,000 in its first year. Education services convenor Steven Purcell said the council had been working hard to promote milk as a nutritious alternative to other drinks. He said, 'By making it free to every pupil we are ensuring everyone who wants it can have it.' Other health moves by the council include providing children with fresh fruit five times a week, free breakfasts for every primary pupil, and supplying mains-fed water coolers to all primary, secondary and special needs schools.
