Free parenting classes will be offered to up to 50,000 parents

Children's minister Sarah Teather has confirmed that the Government is to trial parenting classes in Middlesbrough, High Peak in Derbyshire and the London borough of Camden.

Parents will be given vouchers to pay for classes in these areas.

Organisations and service providers with a proven track record of delivering parenting support will be asked to bid to run the classes.

The Government is keen to promote parenting classes for all families to reduce the stigma of asking for support.

The two-year trial starts in summer 2012. The three areas have been chosen because there is a good mix of locations and demographics, with medium to high levels of deprivation. High Peak was picked because it is an area that is also taking part in a trial to increase the number of health visitors working in children’s centres.
