Free training for male childcarers

A new training scheme is helping unemployed men find work in early years and childcare in London. The project, Cool2Care, gives them work experience and the chance to gain formal childcare qualifications for free.

The men recruited for the training scheme will embark on a CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Playwork, which takes three months, or a one-year CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Early Years Practice.

Cool2Care starts this month in seven London boroughs - Camden, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth and Westminster. The project has received 406,100 of funding from the European Social Fund and is co-financed through the Learning and Skills Council London Central.

Acting project manager, Philip Smith, said, 'Cool2Care is a two-year project that will end in May 2007, and we aim to recruit 150 men overall.
