Rosie Pressland made some valid points relating to language and dialect. It was refreshing to hear her acknowledge regional accents, as I grew up in east London and over the years I have worked in a variety of daycare settings around the country.
Although my distinctive accent easily identifies where I come from, I do not consider that I use sloppy language. But when I read articles that suggest the correct way to speak is reflected by television newscasters or people born into middle-class homes, I feel infuriated and victimised. I was born into a working-class family and I consider that I provide a valuable service to the community.
