Funding helps pre-school go from village hall to eco-building

A pre-school is to move from the village hall to purpose-built eco-friendly premises thanks to a 200,000 grant from Devon County Council and the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

The project has been made possible with funds from the council'sInvesting in Devon programme, money generated from proceeds of the saleof Exeter airport, and the DCSF's Children and Young People's BetterBuildings Fund.

Aveton Gifford Pre-school is currently run from the village MemorialHall and only able to offer one full session a week. It shares the hallwith the local primary school, which holds PE lessons and serves dinnersthere.

The new building, to be constructed behind the primary school, willenable the pre-school to offer more full-time sessions and childcareplaces.

The design of the building will also make it more cost-effective. Theoutside will be made from wood and face south. Solar panels will be usedto heat the building and rainwater harvested to re-use within thesetting.
