'Get involved with community schools'

A leading academic has urged childcare providers in the voluntary and private sectors to make the case for what they have to offer Scotland's New Community Schools (NCS) initiative. Professor Eric Wilkinson of Glasgow University, who has been carrying out a local evaluation of the initiative, said that Glasgow's NCS projects focused on clusters rather than single schools, and it was in this context that the private and voluntary sectors could have a role to play.

He said, 'As far as I'm aware, private nurseries have not been involved with the project nationally, and they have not been in Glasgow. In Glasgow clusters of schools have been trying to develop inter-agency working, and there could be a role for the private sector there. I have advised the Scottish Independent Nurseries Association to get involved. There is a link, but not a strong link, between the NCS and the voluntary sector - they help to support out-of-school services.'
