Get learning in order

Marie Charlton's 'In my view' (14 December) so neatly summed up the message I have been trying to get across to parents for years. I manage a pre-school in an affluent area of Surrey where the pressure for children to succeed academically is overwhelming at times. Showing prospective parents around our pre-school, I am frequently asked how soon we will start teaching the children to read and write. I always tell parents about the many activities they take part in that are precursors to learning to read and write, such as manipulative activities to strengthen hand muscles, enjoying stories in a group session and so on. I also stress the importance of the personal, social and emotional part of the Foundation Stage - how children need to learn to become part of a group, socialise, and take that first step towards independence.
