Letter: Why children aren't learning to talk

I read Pat Wills' column on parenting skills with great interest ('To the point', 28 June).

I too have been observing parents with their children, but my interesthas related to the number of children who have poor or delayed languageskills. I think back to the days when I used to take my children out andwe kept up a constant dialogue about what we could see, recognisingwords, counting, helping with the shopping and so on.

Today, many children seem to be an appendage while their parents carryon never-ending conversations on their mobile phones. On a number ofoccasions I have been standing at the nursery door waiting to hand overa child while the parent finished their phone call - where does this puttheir child in their list of priorities?
