* Recognise that as a manager you have to be a bit of a teacher, mother and social worker to your staff, as well as the children.

* Be non-judgemental so staff are not reticent about coming to you; be as understanding as possible. Good managers have good staff retention. We can never pay as much as the maintained or Sure Start nurseries, but if staff feel happy and supported they tend to stay.

* Recognise that to work with children you need to be on top form and that people who are unhappy won't be giving you quality work. If you give staff time off to sort out their problems, they will return happier. Our managers and deputies are supernumerary so they can cover for any absences.
