'Give them a daily dose of fish oil'

Scientists and nutritional experts are calling on the Government to reintroduce wartime daily doses of fish oil to help improve children's concentration levels at school. The call comes after a survey into the eating habits of 1,125 primary school children found that 86 per cent had not eaten fish in the previous 24 hours. Of those who had eaten fish, most said it had been battered fish or fish fingers - which are not high in the Omega-3 fatty acids regarded as 'brain food'. Only one of the 11 schools involved in the study served any fish products at all.

The Lunchbox Survey was carried out by Dr Amanda Kirby, medical director of the Dyscovery Centre, which specialises in helping children with behavioural and concentration disorders.
