Graduate status

I am sorry that Nicola Carpenter is disillusioned with the new Early Years Professional Status (Letters, 31 August). However, it is crucial that the status is set at graduate level to ensure that the work of early years practitioners is valued and understood. Of four routes to EYPS, three require candidates to have a full degree on entry and a full Level 5 qualification, such as the Sector Endorsed Foundation Degree, is needed for the other.

The Children's Workforce Development Council is developing pathways for candidates who have Level 3 and 4 qualifications. The status will remain at degree level and will offer a long-term career path.

CWDC recognises the wealth of experience and dedication within the early years workforce. EYPS will enable workers to build upon this.

CWDC will publish guidance shortly showing how to achieve the standards for the status. Those with a high level of education will need to meet all practical aspects of being an EYP.
