Green steps

I was delighted with Helen Penn's idea for a national prize for the greenest nursery (To the Point, 9 November). At Westminster Children's Society we have been looking at the many ways our sociable enterprise can make a difference beyond the nursery doors, and consequently we have been 'thinking green' over the past year.

At Westminster Children's Society we have been looking at the many ways our sociable enterprise can make a difference beyond the nursery doors, and consequently we have been 'thinking green' over the past year.

It's a step-by-step approach, starting with things that are easier to do, such as increasing recycling, buying locally and seasonally, reducing carbon emissions, washing at a lower temperature, and reviewing how and what we purchase, from office goods to toys.

In doing this, we have begun a conversation with our 150 staff who have started to think more about their role in helping make us greener at work and at home. We hope that this will also catch parents, and naturally enough, the children have been quick to get the message.
