The summer holidays offer nannies and other outdoor-loving childcarers a great chance to build on their childcare skills, gain experience and make friends at campsites and holiday centres. You can take your pick from Europe to the USA, and closer to home.

Twenty-one-year-old Jo Dempsey got a shock when she arrived for work as a children's courier at Camping Lestours in the French Auvergne - it was so quiet! 'I did go round on the first day wondering what had happened to the 24-hour cash machine, to say nothing of the 24-hour shops,' she says. In a day or two, though, the sheer beauty of the site, lying in a green valley with its own lake, had won her over.
